เจอร์รี เวลบาค พนักงานขายที่มีอดีตเป็นลูกหม้อมาเฟีย ได้รับคำขาดสองข้อ ข้อแรกมาจากเจ้านายอันธพาลของเขา ให้เดินทางไปเม็กซิโก และไปเอาปืนสั้นโบราณอันหาค่ามิได้ที่ชื่อ "เดอะ เม็กซิกัน" กลับมา ข้อแม้ที่สองมาจาก ซาแมนธา บาร์เซล แฟนสาวของเขา ให้เลิกยุ่งกับพวกแก๊งอาชญากรโดยเด็ดขาด เจอร์รีเห็นว่า ถ้ามีปัญหากับซาแมนธายังพอมีชีวิตรอด ซึ่งดีกว่าทางเลือกอีกข้อที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไม่ได้ เขาจึงมุ่งหน้าไปทางชายแดนทิศใต้เพื่อไปรับปืนแทน



การหาปืนสั้นพบไม่ใช่เรื่องยาก แต่การนำมันกลับมาเป็นอีกเรื่องหนึ่ง เพราะเจ้า "เดอะ เม็กซิกัน" นี้มีคำสาป ซึ่งเป็นตำนานที่มีผู้คนมากมายพยายามทำให้เจอร์รีเชื่อ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ...เมื่อซาแมนธาถูกนักฆ่า ลีรอยจับเป็นตัวประกันเพื่อใช้ขู่เจอรี่ให้มอบปืนให้เขา
